Are you ready to follow the crew of the Broken Promise deeper into Torog’s torture den? If so, please listen now to episode 149 of the Icosahedrophilia podcast, or subscribe via iTunes, Zune, or plain old RSS. In our previous episode, our heroes stumbled upon a group of mind flayer torturers; in this episode, our heroes get their first look at the mind flayers’ victim, as the fighting spills over into another room of the torture den.

This episode features the following segments:

Weighing Anchor

Wayne Cole explains why he’s the Gamerati, and I call for your initiative roll.

The Staging Area

I briefly summarize the campaign backstory (referring listeners to the “Story Thus Far” recap episode for a more detailed history of the campaign). I also summarize our previous adventure, “A Sort of Homecoming,” and parts 1–5 of “Kiss of the Spider-Woman.”

The Weather Report

Our heroes get their first look at the mind flayers’ victim, as the fighting spills over into another room of the torture den.

The Prop Shop

I remind you of the terrain tiles that I used to create the entry halls as well as the inner torture den. These tiles came from the following SkeletonKey Games sets:

I talk a little bit about the diminishment of Lolth’s boon, and offer a free enrollment in Johnn Four’s and Tony Medeiros’s Faster RPG Combat course to the first person (other than the cast and crew of the podcast!) who posts here with the true explanation for why Lolth’s boon is fading away. In addition, all listeners have until April 7, 2012 to enroll in the Faster Combat course at a 25% discount by e-mailing Johnn Four and telling him that you heard about this offer on the Icosahedrophilia podcast! Finally, I introduce the Vorpal Network’s new sponsor for this quarter, Continue magazine. If it’s a game, Continue covers it!

Sea Shanties

As always, our theme and bumper music comes from “Racing the Wind” and “Gallows Jig” from the album Phantoms of the High Seas by Nox Arcana, ©2008 Monolith Graphics. This episode also features, in the background, “Defenders of the Realm” by Nox Arcana, from the album Blood of the Dragon, ©2006 Monolith Graphics. 1. I think that Lolth’s boon is diminishing because the PCs are in closer physical proximity to another god, namely Torog. And I believe that he is the one bound and tortured by the baddies of the torture den; much in the same way that Lolth was not in control of her minions who became aberrant in the Fane of Lolth. I think that the physical presence of a god has an effect within their radius and that Torog’s presence takes priority over Lolth’s because the PCs are closer to him…BUT since he is not in control and the aberrant creatures are subjugating him, there are no positive effects of divine favor that can be in operation when the god you are closest to is diminished. Hmm…maybe I’m over-thinking it.
Anyway, I love the podcast and am excited to hear the story advance!

Uh, a Wizzard did it? Honestly haven’t a clue. But posting a comment so others might try and guess.

  3. I’m guessing Lolth’s boon is fading because she is now losing her “divine” status and the constellation loosely associated with Lolth is beginning to change as has happened with other deities.

The more they “please her” with their choices the longer her boon lasts, the less happy she is with their actions, the boon drops??

  5. The boon is dropping because Lolth is a sneaky goddess, and it is an elaborate trick she played on the PC’s.

  6. The boon is fading because of the influence of the Far Realm and the aberrant creatures here torturing Torog. This influence is what diminished Lolth in the first place and is strong here where the mind flayers are torturing Torog – something they would not be able to do if Torog was at full power. I think it is powered by the spinning God-Slayer shard fragment in the sphere.

  7. I am rather late to the game here, but I thought I would submit just for fun.

There are some good guesses above, but clearly the answer lies with the PC’s. Lately DM Chris has been making more and more noises about having the Characters Action’s lead to Story elements being revealed [vis a vis the brain coming into combat when they round a corner in this episode], so the loss of the Boon must be tied to something that they have done–but not something that they have done to please or displease Lolth…maybe they are just moving further away from her & her influence.

I am going to guess that the Characters are now Paragon Tier & have left the mortal realm–the chamber that they have entered is some kind of Far Realm Teleportal and they are no longer in the Underdark, but rather have moved to the Far Realms where the Elder Gods are also awake and getting ready to unleash destruction.
